Infrastructure design and installation of 150+ chargers at large-scale electric vehicle charging hub at the NEC Campus, Birmingham for The EV Network

Project summary

We completed works on behalf of The EV Network at the NEC Campus in Birmingham. The site launched on Thursday 7 September 2023 and is one of the largest electric vehicle charging hubs in Europe.

BP Pulse is the charge point operator (CPO) for the hub, which significantly increases the availability of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the UK. The site offers a mix of ultra-rapid and AC charging options, meeting the needs of all types of electric vehicles in one location.

Client: The EV Network

The EV Network

The project was awarded in February 2023. Our team mobilised quickly and commenced on-site works within two weeks, working alongside Toureen Group, the appointed civil engineering contractor. We completed the full design of the AC and DC infrastructure to meet the programme start date.

As part of the installation, the team deployed four pre-cast concrete bases supplied by Banagher Precast. These bases provided an efficient alternative to traditional in-situ concrete foundations, reducing installation time from three days to just three hours. This solution also offered environmental benefits, including the elimination of concrete waste, reduced CO₂ emissions, and a saving of up to six tonnes of concrete compared to standard methods.

High-voltage grid connection was completed mid-May (directly from existing DNO primary substation) with the site energised on 15 May.

Within four weeks of energisation, the team installed:

  • 150 x 7 kW AC chargers
  • 16 x 300 kW Alpitronic DC rapid chargers

Works also included:

  • Supply and installation of 11,142 metres of low-voltage cable and 360 metres of high-voltage cable
  • Completion of 1,200 low-voltage terminations and 12 high-voltage terminations
  • Installation and commissioning of 11 Schneider low-voltage panels
  • Installation and commissioning of five packaged Schneider substations and GRP units

The delivery and execution have been second to none. In my 13 years of project management, I’ve never experienced such professionalism and quality from an independent connection from start to completion.
